There are many various theories of origin of Hung gar kuen.

  + Hung kuen Hung Hei-Gun:

Followers of Hung Hei-Gun in Guangtong consider Hung Hei-Gun the founder of Shaolin Hung Gar Kuen. Hung Hei-Gun was the best student of Jee Sin Bonze in Shaolin Foukien pagoda. After Shaolin Foukien pagoda was destroyed by the Wades-Gile, Hung Hei-Gun left there for Futson, his homeland in Guangtong province to start a camp of martial arts training to spread Shaolin kuen . However, in order to keep secret, he called this martial art Hung Kuen or Hung gar kuen.

Luk A Choy was a student of Jee Sin Bonze and later was sent to Hong Hy quan by Jee Sin Bonze to receive training of Shaolin kuen.

Luk A Choy passed the art to Wong Tai, Wong Tai passed it to his son - Wong Ky Ying, then Wong Ky Ying passed it to his son - Wong Fei Hung (1840-1933), Wong Fei Hung passed it to Lam Sai Wing, Lam Sai Wing passed it to his paternal grandson - Lam Cho (1910-?) who is now 97 years old (2007) and lives in Hongkong. All followers of Hung kuen Hung Hei-Gun in Guangtong and the US now are students of Lam Sai Wing and Lam Cho.

According to this theory, Hung kuen originated with the Founder of the Ming Dynasty Zhu Yuan Zhang because the word “Hong” was in “Hongwu Empires” which was the first date of royal dynasty of the Ming

+ Other theories:

According to other theories, the Founder of the Song Dynasty Zhao Kuang Yin dreamt of Deity giving lessons of 36 basic movements of Hung kuen and then created Tai Zu Chang quan. If we carefully observe, it is easy for us to realize that Tai Zu Chang quan lesson has many basic movements and methods of Hung kuen which are present in systems of training lessons of other factions of Shaolin Hung gar kuen later.

The famous lessons Xiao Hung kuen (Minor) and Da Hung kuen (Major) of Shaolin Sungshan pagoda now spread in pagodas in China and some factions or Shaolin in Vietnam were obvious proofs of the fact that Hung kuen had originated from Shaolin Sungshan before Shaolin Foukien was created. Therefore Hung kuen was created before both Jee Sin Bonze and Hung Hei-Gun appeared.

However, no matter what the origin is, there is an undeniable fact that resolute beauty of Hung gar kuen moved hearts of many generations of fans of martial arts. Hung gar kuen was considered King of South Kungfu or called Hung Kuen No 1 in Five Great Family Names of South Kungfu Shaolin Foukien by the Chinese .
